| | A Navy veteran who served in the southwest Pacific at the end
of World War II, Nick Mangieri has had a varied career. As a freelance writer
for the early men's adventure magazines, he took many solo junkets into
foreign locales, including the interiors of Central and South American countries,
where he diamond-prospected in the jungles, hunted jaguar, and mountain-climbed. Nick
MangieriMangieri's interest in law enforcement began in New
York City when he worked as a private detective. That whetted his appetite
for work in the more organized governmental agencies. He was later to
become a deputy sheriff (California), a chief of police (Alaska), and
a federal agent (Washington, D.C). In the intervening years, he held a
variety of state and federal civil service positions in the administrative
and analyst fields. He also has ridden in horse shows and rodeos.
On the academic side, Mangieri has also been a professional
student. He obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of the
Pacific (English) and his master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University
(public administration and administration of justice). He has done extensive
graduate work at California State University (in both government and criminal
justice); attended law school at the University of the Pacific; and took
additional courses at The College of William and Mary's Law School while
        he pursued a doctoral degree.
He has also been an instructor and lecturer at the
University of Alaska in police science and developed and taught a course
in police ethics for a Washington-area international center that trained
        Saudi Arabian police students.
